Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice.
Sometimes it may seem very simplistic to encourage others with the words,'rejoice in the Lord'. It is not practical to always greet every situation with a smile. Paul also tells us to weep with those who are weeping. We should not have a disconnect in our Christian walk.
I like to think of JOY as a principle. If I set Joy as HOME on my GPS I can always find my way back to it. We may go through many situations that do not call for joy but we can always find our way back home to JOY!
When we allow joy to permanently reside in our inner beings no matter what happens on the outside, our life will always reset to joy. So it is possible to do what Paul says when Joy lives in our hearts.
